Amazon to resume drone delivery after crash in Arizona

Amazon restarts his drone delivery service in Arizona, beginning Friday as two federal agencies continue to investigate a crash that took place earlier this week.

Amazon suspended operations in the West Valley in the Phoenix Metro area – currently its only commercial market – after a crashed Wednesday. Two of the company’s primary air delivery drones collided with the boom of a crane near its same day in Tolleson, Arizona, who sent them crashed to the ground.

Amazon has delivered packages that weigh up to five pounds to customers via its Prime Air Drone Service in West Valley of Phoenix since November 2024.

Amazon spokesman Terrence Clark said the company will continue to support “ongoing reviews from relevant agencies.” The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration announced on Thursday that investigations of the crash are underway.

“Security is our highest priority and we have completed our own internal review of this incident and are sure there was no problem with the drones or the technology that supports them,” Clark said in an E -mail statement. “Nevertheless, we have introduced additional processes such as improved visual landscape inspections to better monitor to move obstacles like cranes.”

The program has been exposed to several setbacks over the years, including the departure of keys as the company pushes towards its goal of using drones to deliver 500 million packages a year by the end of the decade.

Amazon stopped testing of his drones after a mid-air collision involving two of its models in Oregon in December 2024. At that time Amazon said it would suspend drone supplies in College Station, Texas and Arizona pending a software update to its drone fleet. Amazon no longer has operations at College Station.

Amazon has also scored a victory or two, including receiving the approval of the US federal aviation management to fly its delivery drones longer distances. This approval in May 2024 removed a legislative obstacle, enabling Amazon to expand its Prime Air Service. Amazon has previously said that it was planning to expand Prime Air Delivery Services in Texas in Richardson, San Antonio and Waco and across the country with places planned for Detroit and Kansas City.
