England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt has been ruled out of his side’s next two matches at the Women’s T20 World Cup with a calf injury sustained in Tuesday’s win over Ireland.
Sciver-Brunt withdrew in the 48th at Southampton, with an ECB statement released later that night saying it was a precautionary measure due to calf tightness.
The 33-year-old underwent a scan on Wednesday, and after further assessment by the England medical team, he will now sit out Saturday’s meeting with Scotland at Headingley and next Wednesday’s meeting with the West Indies at Lord’s.
Sciver-Brunt was sidelined from late April until earlier this month after suffering an injury to the same calf while playing for The Blaze in domestic cricket.
Off-spinner Charlie Dean will deputize as England captain in Sciver-Brunt’s absence, as she did for the ODI and T20I series against New Zealand and the T20Is against India earlier this summer.
Sciver-Brunt will remain with the England team during her rehabilitation.
England are two from two at the World Cup, with a four-wicket success against Ireland at the Hampshire Bowl following an 87-run demolition of Sri Lanka at Edgbaston on the opening night.
Playing as a specialist batsman against Sri Lanka and Ireland, Sciver-Brunt hit 46 not out from 22 balls against the former as her team posted a tournament record of 219-1 in Birmingham.
Her knock of 48 in the Irish game helped rally England from 35-3 as they reached the target of 119 with 15 balls to spare.
The hosts will now hope to have their captain back in action for the final group game against defending T20 World Cup champions New Zealand at The Kia Oval on Saturday 27 June.
The semi-finals will take place on 30 June and 2 July respectively, before the final on 5 July.
