GitHub Copilot, an AI coding tool offered by Microsoft-owned GitHub, has now reached more than 20 million users, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said of the company’s earnings call on Wednesday. A spokesman for GitHub confirmed to Techcrunch that this number represents “users of all the time.”

This means that five million people have tried GitHub Copilot for the first time in the last three months; The company reported in April that the tool had reached 15 million users. Microsoft and Github do not report how many of these 20 million people have continued to use the AI coding tool on a monthly or daily basis – though these measurements are probably much lower.

Microsoft also reported that GitHub Copilot, which is among the most popular AI coding tools offered today, is used by 90% of Fortune 100. The product’s growth among corporate customers has also grown about 75% compared to the last quarter, according to the company.

AI coding tools are rising in popularity and they appear to be one of the few AI products that generate remarkable revenue. By 2024, Nadella said GitHub Copilot was a bigger business than the whole of GitHub was when Microsoft acquired it in 2018. This year, it seems that GitHub Copilot’s growth rate has continued in a positive direction.

The world’s most popular AI coding tools still have small user bases compared to AI -Chatbots like Chatgpt and Gemini, which attracts hundreds of millions of users every month. Of course, software technology is more niche than the general informative queries offered by AI Chatbots.

That said, software engineers and their employers seem to be willing to pay a premium for AI coding tools. And with Microsoft’s long list of corporate customers and Github’s ecosystem of developers, GitHub Copilot is well positioned to dominate the Enterprise AI coding tools.

The cursor, another popular AI coding tool, wants to challenge GitHub Copilot in Enterprise, and it has increased the talent from new AI startups to do so. The cursor reportedly had more than a million people who used his product every day in March, according to Bloomberg. At that time, the company generated about $ 200 million in annual recurring revenue. Today, Cursor’s Arrest is more than $ 500 million, suggesting that there are now many more people using their products every day.

While GitHub Copilot and Cursor initially tried to tackle different parts of the developer experience, they are steadily converting to similar products.

Both companies have recently introduced AI agents to review code and catch bugs introduced by humans. GitHub and Cursor are also trying to create AI agents that automate programs -work processes, allowing developers to relieve tasks completely. Nadella said during Wednesday’s earnings that GitHub was so much momentum with their AI coding agents.

In addition to the cursor, Github has a number of well-capitalized competitors who would like to sell AI coding tools to the company.

There are Google – who acquired the leaders of AI coding start -up windsurf – as well as cognition, the manufacturer of Devin, who subsequently acquired the rest of the Windsurf’s team. It is not to mention Openai and Anthropic, both of which are building their own AI coding offerings powered by internal AI models, Codex and Claude Code in an attempt to win the market.

The new space is quickly heated to one of AI’s most competitive markets.
