Luke Donald has appointed six of Europe’s victorious 2023 Ryder Cup team as his captain’s choice to end his line-up for this year’s competition in New York.
Europe’s six automatic qualifications were confirmed after Betfred British Masters on August 24, with Rory McIlroy, Robert Macintyre, Tommy Fleetwood, Justin Rose, Rasmus Hojgaard and Tyrrell Hatton, all securing their places in Team Europe’s line-up.
Donald is looking to lead Europe to just their fifth away victory in the Ryder Cup story and a first since ‘Miracle at Medinah’ in 2012, when the Englishman prioritizes the experience when he ends the rest of his list of Bethpage Black – Live from 26 to 28 September at Sky Sports Golf.
Shane Lowry, Sepp Straka, Ludvig Ã…berg, Viktor Hovland and Matt Fitzpatrick were the next five in the Ryder Cup qualifying increases and have all been submitted elections, two years from presenting in Europe’s 16.5-11.5 success in Rome two years ago.
Two-time great champion Jon Rahm also returns to Team Europe and makes a fourth consecutive Ryder Cup look, leaving Donald with 11 of the same 12-man list he had in 2023 when he chases back-to-back victories over the United States.
Hojgaard will be the only rookie in Donald’s side and replaces twin brother Nicolai Hojgaard in the European setup, while Keegan Bradley has four debutants in Team US Line-Up and only six players from their 2023 Ryder Cup team.
Europe to take experience with away Ryder Cup
Rahm was Europe’s top scorer during the last Ryder Cup on American soil and ended undefeated in Rome, where the Spanish joined Legion XIII teammate Hatton and Team US Bryson DeChambeau as the three lives Golf League members in case.
Straka is a two-time winner on the PGA Tour this season and will return after an impressive debut in 2023, despite struggling in Majors this season, while Lowry gets a third consecutive Ryder Cup performance after only dropping out of the automatic places in the last week of the qualifying campaign.
Yberg formed an undefeated partnership with Hovland two years ago, including a record-breaking 9 & 7 victory over Scottie Scheffler and Brooks Koepka in Saturday Foursomes, with both back involved again and a potential mating for Donald’s disposal.
Fitzpatrick was Donald’s last election after an impressive summer where he has registered top-eight finishes in five of his last seven starts, which means that eight of the European team has previous experience playing in an Away Ryder Cup.
Wallace is suffering more Ryder Cup heartache
Matt Wallace ended up in 12th place in the qualifying stands and missed a captain’s choice, with the English man reduced to tears as he discussed his Ryder Cup hope after a bound second finish on the Omega European Masters.
“I will never give up the Ryder Cup – I just won’t,” Wallace said on Sunday, after he had missed a Captain’s election in 2018 – a year he won three times – and described a European debut as his main goal of the season.
Marco Money was a two-time winner on the DP World Tour this season, and another name discussed as a potential captain’s choice, with Harry Hall’s race for PGA Tour’s Tour Championship, making him another competitor to a Rookie look.
“I feel that I have done as much as I might,” said money after his bound eighth finish in Switzerland, after winning the Danish golf championship two weeks earlier. “It’s just nice to be in the conversation, to be honest.”
