Today marks an important milestone for education in Malaysia: All 20 public universities have officially activated Gemini for Education within their academic and administrative frameworks, reaching nearly 600,000 students and 75,000 faculty members. As part of their existing Google Workspace for Education environment, these universities now have access to Gemini for Education, providing the entire academic community with secure, AI-powered assistance for research and learning. The Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) has further equipped 40,000 faculty members with Google AI Pro for Education for expanded access to our world-class AI models, alongside providing NotebookLM Enterprise to 128,000 students to supercharge their research and writing. This initiative supports Malaysia’s goal of becoming an AI-powered nation by 2030.
Through these initiatives, students and lecturers in public universities in Malaysia now have access to Gemini 3.1 Pro – our most advanced reasoning model – infused with LearnLM – our family of pedagogical models fine-tuned for learning. They can explore features like Guided Learning, which acts as a collaborative partner to help students build a deep understanding of concepts instead of just getting quick answers, and Deep Research, their personal research assistant.
In addition to access to technology, we offer robust training to help students and faculty develop AI skills. Initiatives like Gemilang, the Google Skills platform, free Google AI courses, Gemini certification for college students, and Google Career Launchpad are designed to help users increase efficiency, personalize learning, and prepare for the workforce.
Here are some examples of how key Malaysian institutions are using Google AI tools.
Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP): Personalization of Education with Gems
UniMAP personalizes learning for students through Gems, personalized versions of Gemini you can build and customize to be experts in any subject without any coding. A pioneering university lecturer built a custom gem that acts as a specialized, on-demand study partner for his Integrated Circuits Design and MEMS Design and Fabrication students in the Faculty of Electronic Engineering and Technology. Gem guides them through their specific curriculum and creates a more interactive and personalized learning experience.
