Ben Stokes has rejected any suggestion that he and Brendon McCullum are not on the same page, insisting that differences of opinion are an integral part of healthy and successful sporting relationships.
The relationship between England’s captain and head coach has come under forensic scrutiny following a disastrous 4-1 Ashes defeat in Australia, where their tour preparation and unwavering attacking philosophy were heavily criticised.
At times during the ill-fated series there appeared to be a divergence of messages between coach and captain, but Stokes maintains they remain largely on the same page ahead of England’s Test summer.
“When you’re in a leadership position with someone else, if someone thinks you’re always going to agree on everything, then that’s just impossible,” Stokes said.
“To me, it’s not a healthy environment for sports where everyone just agrees with everyone or says yes to the person up there. You need debate. You need discussions. Then you end up getting to the place you both want to get to.
“As similar as me and Brendon are, we’re different in other ways. But what we both want is to be as successful as we possibly can.
“How we succeed may be the same here, but there’s a little bit of difference — but we’re always going to end up in the same place by having these discussions.
“We agree 95 percent of the time, but for the five percent where we have different opinions, we talk it through and end up getting where we want to be.
“To agree on every single thing is impossible. To say we weren’t aligned is a massive exaggeration.”
Stokes and McCullum will now be tasked with lifting England off the canvas during this summer’s home Test series against New Zealand and Pakistan.
Stokes expressed hope that their partnership will continue beyond the summer and until the end of 2027, after which he hopes to have had another chance at Ashes redemption.
“With what Brendon and I have been able to achieve with the group over a four-year period, I just couldn’t imagine doing what we’re trying to do with anyone else,” Stokes added.
“We’re both very proud men in what we do. We put a lot of our heart and soul into this job. Brendon certainly has in the four years he’s done it so far and hopefully we’ll still be together at the end of 2027 and win what we want to win.
“I’m very confident in my and Brendon’s abilities to work together, because we’ve been doing it for so long now – but work together in a slightly different way.
“The main point for me and Brendon is our adaptation to win and make this team as good as it can be. It’s always been that way since we started. It might just look a little different now after four years of working together.
“We still want to win everything and we still want to give the boys the best chance they possibly can to be as good as they can be.”
