At Florida State University, we believe technology should move students from passive consumers to active learners. While we expect every new innovation to meet this standard, we specifically seek solutions that completely raise the bar. We’re inspired by advances like Google NotebookLM, an AI-powered research assistant and thinking partner, based on trusted sources and designed to help our students, faculty and staff make sense of everything.
When we launched our AI pilot with Google for Education, our goal was simple: put safe, accessible AI capabilities directly into the hands of our campus community to see if we could really move the needle on academic success. What we didn’t expect was how quickly our campus would embrace it.
The power of a personal study tool
In higher education, we talk a lot about success measurements, but the real effect is measured in individual breakthroughs. Shortly after introducing NotebookLM to campus, we saw students struggling with a ‘C’ grade completely change their study habits and their grades in a matter of weeks.
Although tutors and office hours are not available 24/7, NotebookLM can help fill support gaps as a personal study tool available 24/7. Whether it’s dinner in the library or midnight before a final exam, students can create flashcards, take practice quizzes, build study guides, and listen to audio summaries of dense material. Time and again, students shared how they used this immediate, 24/7 study tool to help them master concepts and improve their grades.
Built for everyone, based on accuracy
One of the biggest obstacles with new technology is the skills gap: those who know how to encourage complex technology and those who don’t. Florida State University offers Gemini and NotebookLM because they help level the playing field. They are intuitive enough that an absolute novice can pick it up in minutes, type in a question and immediately get value.
But accessibility for students is only half the equation—the technology must also earn the trust of our educators. Crucially for our faculty, NotebookLM is strictly based on the source materials supplied to it. This ensures that the tool adheres to the specific information provided; it keeps students anchored directly to the professor’s curriculum and helps promote long-term study skills.
A force multiplier, not a replacement
At FSU, we recognize that the heart of higher education will always be human curiosity and mentorship. AI will never replace our world-class instructors or researchers. Instead, it is a force multiplier.
By using NotebookLM and Gemini to streamline lesson preparation, generate visual aids, and accelerate data discovery, our faculty regain valuable hours. The time saved is reinvested where it matters most: face-to-face engagement, mentorship and building the vital soft skills our students will need in the future.
AI is helping us take education to the next level for the next generation of learners.
