Introduction of Google ML and Systems Junior Faculty Awards

As part of our ongoing commitment to the Academic Research Community, we advertise a new program, Google ML and Systems Junior Faculty’s pricesAt As we today present to more than 50 lecturers at 27 US universities. These professors conduct analysis, design and implementation of effective, scalable, secure and reliable computer systems. Their work crosses the technology tray, from algorithms to software and hardware, enabling machine learning and cloud computing on an increasingly massive scale. The recipients selected by a prominent group of Google engineers and researchers will receive a $ 100,000 grant in unlimited financing.

Google ML and Systems Junior Faculty’s prices add to many other Google programs that promote academic expertise. Just a few examples include our scholarships and research researcher programs, our sponsorship and participation in conferences and workshops, our internship, student researcher and visitors research programs for students and faculties and the thousands of research articles we publish every year.

Looking back on my experience as a faculty member earlier in my career, both at Duke University and UC San Diego, funding from industry and government, especially the National Science Foundation, was crucial both for my own success and more importantly to my students’ success. I had the privilege of mentoring and advising almost 50 ms and Ph.D. -The students, who all are now entrepreneurs, engineers, product leaders and academics. Early Google contributions made much of a success with our work across students’ financing, research prototypes and perhaps most importantly access to Google team members with insight into the most interesting and challenging problems.

We pay this forward for the next wave of pioneering and border research at the intersection of ML and systems. It is a challenging time to conduct critical academic research considering uncertainties in the financing environment. While Google’s funding is only a small part of the overall need, we hope that others across industry, government and philanthropy find ways to support research and education to keep this crucial driving force for our technological ecosystem lively.

Working with academic researchers is crucial to the kind of scientific breakthroughs that contribute to continued progress and prosperity. Google himself was founded by two graduate students who conducted basic research in artificial intelligence and computer science. We are very happy to see the breakthroughs the next generation of the faculty will deliver in the coming years. We know that they will help invent the future and mentor the next generation of talented students, many of whom will become faculty members on their own, start new businesses or fill out both startups and large companies.
