Justin Rose is six shots clear after the third round of the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines with a tournament record score and 13th PGA Tour title in his sights.
Rose birdied four on an impeccable front nine, including three in a row from the fifth, then mixed three more with three bogeys coming home to post a four-under 68 and reach 21 under for the event in San Diego.
The best winning score in Farmers Insurance Open history is the 22-under achieved by Tiger Woods in 1999 and George Burns in 1987, so the 45-year-old will break that if he shoots two-under or better on Sunday.
The largest margin of victory is the eight strokes seven-time champion Woods beat Ryuji Imada in 2008. Rose won this tournament with a score of 21 under back in 2019, finishing two strokes ahead of Adam Scott.
It will now take a slump from him or something special from his opponents to deny him a second Torrey Pines title and a third PGA Tour win in three years, following the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February 2023 and the FedEx St. Jude Championship last August.
America’s Joel Dahmen is a distance second at 15-under after matching Rose’s four-under on Saturday, with Japan’s Ryo Hisatsune and South Korea’s Si Woo Kim tied for third at 13-under, about eight shots off the lead.
The round of the day belonged to Germany’s Stephan Jaeger, whose seven-under 65 moved him up 39 places on the leaderboard to sixth on 11 under, with Ireland’s Seamus Power on the same total after four bogeys in his last seven holes.
Brooks Koepka – playing his first PGA Tour event since returning from LIV Golf – is tied for 61st at two under. with his one-over third round with an extraordinary shot on the first green from the cart path.
