Team Europe is on the verge of a historic Ryder Cup title defense on ADD Earth after overcoming a hostile crowd to build a record-breaking 11.5-4.5 lead over Team USA on Bethpage Black.
Luke Donald’s side has dominated the first two days of a unilateral competition in New York and won all four sessions – including three of the four matches in Saturday Fourballs – to take the biggest lead in the Ryder Cup story into Sunday’s singles.
America PGA was forced to add extra security during the afternoon matches to control growing heckling and abuse against European players who responded by winning three more points to move within 2.5 points after retaining the title and three points from victory.
Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry overcome a hostile atmosphere to watch Justin Thomas and Cameron Young 2up in the top match, shortly after Tommy Fleetwood won his fourth match of the week by working with Justin Rose for a 3 & 2 victory over Scottie Scheffler and Bryson DeChambeau.
Scheffler’s latest defeat makes him the first world # 1 of the story losing his first four matches in a Ryder Cup, with his Caddy Ted Scott and Defechaus Caddy Greg Bodine, involved in a heated conflict with European players and vice -captain Francesco Molinari, who TEPERS over.
The last two matches demanded the last hole settlers, with the afternoon’s only victorious American couple JJ Spaun and Xander Schaugele angled Jon Rahm and Sepp Straka 1up and Tyrrell Hatton – a late replacement for the injured Viktor Hovland – along with Matt Fitzpatrick to beat Sam Burns and Patrick Cantlay with the same margin.
Fleetwood gets the opportunity on Sunday to join a group of four players to win all five sessions on a Ryder Cup, while Keegan Bradley’s hosts will have to win 10 points on the last day to avoid defeat.
Team Europe On Brink of History as New York Crowd goes too far
McIlroy was booed through a heated afternoon session where a cry of “F *** you, Rory” disturbed his putt in the fourth before Lowry poured in one eagle and birds the next to move them two in front.
The atmosphere was fleeting enough for Thomas to make the crowd shake down on the sixth when McIlroy refused to put until they did, while Young spiked a long -range birdie at the next, and Thomas won the ninth to leave the match tied up at the trip.
Lowry had to be held back by his caddy after a heck in the tenth tee, while McIlroy angled them back in front with a birdie at the 14th before the European couple produced a three-bird finish to close an impressive victory.
Another second match of high quality saw the English pair of Fleetwood and Rose sharing the first two holes in Birdies before moving on with a Rose Birdie at the next, only for Defecbeau to place an Eagle-Birdie race to win the next two and move Team USA ahead.
Rose replied by placing the back-to-back Birdies and Fleetwood added birdies on each side of the Dechambeau, who converted from 12 meters at the 11th, before Rose rolled into another on the 14th to put Europe three up with four to play.
An argument between players and Caddies followed when DeChambeau howled a Birdie Putt on the 15th to expand a competition that ended in a European victory by the next one, with a session, cowardly an opportunity until a late rally from home.
Rahm and Straka were one ahead with two to play until Spaun delivered two spectacular late birdies to snap a point for Team USA, while Fitzpatrick and Hatton produced sensational final hole birdies to close victory in the lower match and Cap an extraordinary day for Team Europe.
Donald warns against self -satisfaction with the story in the future
No team has ever overturned more than a four-point deficit on the last day, Europe’s seven-shot pillow therefore makes them overwhelming favorites, although Donald remains focused on competing victory.
“We’re trying to get to 14.5 points first, and hopefully we can add it,” Donald said. “The job is never done until it’s done. So I won’t sit here and be self -satisfied.
“I know how strong the United States are – they want lots of battle in them. They had lots of battle today. Obviously, their jobs are not done yet, but having this tripod in New York with most of the cheer on our part is incredible.
“Just the elasticity and confidence these guys have in themselves, in their partners, are really, really incredible. I didn’t really imagine this!”
Bradley, who is facing a home win, added, “Well, I see what seems to be historic to put. They do everything. They are a fantastic team. They are good players. They are a hard team to beat.”
