Today, we announced plans to develop a new data center in DTE Energy’s Michigan service area and shared details about our energy-first approach in partnership with DTE. As part of the agreement, we will add clean, 24/7 power directly to the grid to support the new data center, improve the state’s grid reliability and further establish Michigan as an innovation leader in infrastructure development.
Google is committed to responsibly growing its infrastructure by expanding local energy supplies and funding affordable energy initiatives in the communities where it operates. As part of this announcement, Google is introducing a $10 million Energy Impact Fund to scale and accelerate affordable energy initiatives designed to reduce monthly bills for Michigan communities. These include home weatherization, innovations in household efficiency technology and energy workforce development projects. Google will initiate an application process for funding for local organizations.
Google’s data center operations will be powered by 2.7 gigawatts (GW) of new resources for the grid, including solar power, advanced storage technologies and demand flexibility. This Clean Capacity Acceleration Agreement with DTE (same structure as the Clean Transition Tariff) will bring new, clean resources online while supporting the state’s transition away from coal-fired power. As part of our standard approach to building new data centers, Google will fully cover its electricity costs and infrastructure needs, helping to ensure that its growth protects local taxpayers and actively strengthens the long-term resiliency of the state’s power grid.
At the heart of this work are the communities in which Google operates. We are committed to working closely with our neighbors to promote local economies and sustainable operations. This includes a responsible commitment to using water rooted in a comprehensive assessment of the local environment, ensuring that every cooling decision is driven by data to minimize the environmental footprint.
Google is currently evaluating a site in Van Buren Township and will update the community as we know more. We look forward to working with Michiganders to bring new technologies and energy directly to the grid. We are convinced that energy growth and taxpayer protection can go hand in hand.
