Ellie Scotney is set to write her own chapter in British boxing history on Sunday night.
If she beats Mayelli Flores to collect the WBA, WBO, WBC and IBF super bantamweight titles, she will become Britain’s youngest undisputed world champion in the four-belt era.
Her trainer Shane McGuigan is not only backing Scotney to win when she takes on Flores at Kensington’s Olympia, live on Sky Sports tonight, but reckons there will be far more to come from her yet.
“If you want my honest opinion, I want her to be an undisputed three-weight world champion. That’s the next goal, that’s the next mission, and I think she has the skills to do it,” McGuigan told Sky Sports.
“I think she will be the undisputed champion of the world in three weights.”
Now Scotney has put on weight and this will surely be her last fight at 122kg.
“It’s so hard [making weight]. The only reason I’ve hung on so long is to go unchallenged,” she shared Sky Sports.
“The reason we’ve stuck with super-bantam for so long is for the undisputed, so everyone’s eyes are on it.
“God willing, the fundraiser will be finished on April 5 and I will move on.
“There are massive fights to be made at featherweight,” Scotney said.
“All that matters is April and that’s all my attention is on.”
Flores is a short opponent but strong with a furious punch output. These elements could combine for a frenetic encounter over 10 two-minute rounds.
McGuigan said of Flores: “It’s a really, really tough fight. She’s been beaten once, but it was a long time ago. She beat a very good champion in [Nazarena] Romero and she has a great work rate, a decent puncher, is very small.
“She’s probably going to be hard to beat because of her size. We’ve prepared very, very well, but how do you get a four-foot-11 sparring partner who’s as athletic, as strong, as durable as the one she’s going to box?
“That’s one that we really have to turn on and make sure she comes out of this game with a win.”
Dolan: It’s the right time for me
Emma Dolan will open the televised bill in an IBF super-flyweight world title fight against Mexico’s Irma Garcia.
It will be Dolan’s first world championship competition. But she wants to emulate Scotney, an international amateur teammate, and win more titles.
“All about legacy for me. I have no interest in this and that. It’s about legacy fights for me, I want to fight all the other champions,” she shared Sky Sports.
“I knew eventually I wanted to get to this stage and eventually I wanted to be on the world stage, so I didn’t know who I was going to fight, but I knew I wanted to fight one of them. So I’ve been watching Irma for the last couple of years, so I’m very aware of what she does and what she does well.”
Dolan continued: “I just have to do what I have to do and I know that will be more than enough.
“I feel like it’s the right time for me. I feel like I’m ready for it and I can’t wait to come and grab it.
“I haven’t been in a boring fight yet. Depending on how Irma decides to box, that will be a factor, but it should make for a really good fight.”
