Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has signed a new one-year contract at Old Trafford with the option of a further 12 months.
The 33-year-old’s previous Man Utd deal was set to expire at the end of the season.
Maguire’s new contract comes after he earned an England recall for the March internationals and featured in both games, boosting hopes of making Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad.
Maguire has started every game since Michael Carrick took charge in January and helped Man Utd’s remarkable rise, losing just one in 10 games and moving up to third in the Premier League.
After signing his new deal, he told the club’s website: “To represent Manchester United is the ultimate honour. It’s a responsibility that makes myself and my family proud every single day.
“I am delighted to extend my journey at this incredible club for at least eight seasons and continue to play in front of our special supporters to create more great moments together.
“You can feel the ambition and potential in this exciting squad. The determination throughout the club to fight for major trophies is clear for all to see and I am confident that our best moments together lie ahead.”
Maguire’s new deal will take him into an eighth season at Man Utd after he joined from Leicester for what is still a world record fee of £80m for a defender in August 2019.
The former Hull defender has won the FA Cup and League Cup in his seven years at Old Trafford, making 266 appearances in all competitions and scoring 17 goals.
Director of Football Jason Wilcox added: “Harry represents the mentality and resilience required to perform for Manchester United. He is the ultimate professional who brings invaluable experience and leadership to our young, ambitious squad.
“Harry, like everyone at the club, is absolutely determined to help Manchester United achieve regular and sustained success.”
Kobbie Mainoo are also close to agreeing a new deal at Old Trafford which will include a significant pay rise.
The proposal for the 20-year-old is a five-year deal that runs until 2031. United are keen for his new deal to better reflect his progression and current status in the first team.
His current contract was signed in 2023 when he was still 17.
Analysis: Maguire may have moved on without Carrick appointment
Sky Sports News’ Danyal Khan:
Harry Maguire has become a cult hero at Manchester United.
It can be easy to forget and dismiss the journey Maguire has been on at the club since signing in August 2019 for £80m, a world record fee for a defender at the time.
He was made captain by Ole Gunnar Solskjær soon after his arrival at United, but was just as quickly stripped of the same captaincy by Erik ten Hag, who preferred Bruno Fernandes.
After a strong start to his United career, Maguire had to fight back. Not just to win the approval of the manager of his time, but also the crowds he played in front of.
Whether it was booed on a Manchester United pre-season tour in Melbourne or on England duty in Ireland – Maguire could have taken the easy exit.
He could have left in the summer of 2023, with West Ham heavily pursuing him, but he decided to stay and fight for his place.
His last 18 months have perhaps epitomized his United career. Adapting and impressing in a system that was flawed under Ruben Amorim but still produces moments United fans won’t forget for a long time.
Whether it was the late extra-time winner against Lyon in the Europa League at Old Trafford to secure a 7-6 win on aggregate last season, or Maguire, who a few rounds later found himself on the right in Bilbao, dribbling like Ronaldinho – his cross largely produced the first goal in an impressive away performance for United.
Fast forward to this season, his winner against Liverpool United sealed their first win at Anfield since 2016.
Since Carrick’s arrival in January, Maguire has started every game – including two monumental performances in back-to-back wins against Manchester City and Arsenal.
It’s fair to say that the centre-back’s future may have been much more uncertain under Amorim and a parting of ways looked more likely, but since Carrick’s return to the club – he has repeatedly insisted and highlighted the importance of Maguire’s experience and leadership.
Apparently two qualities that this United cannot lose if they are to continue to build into next season, and for Maguire it is another chapter in a riveting career – one that, when it ends at Old Trafford, will be full of admiration from those inside Old Trafford as well as outside.
